Air pollution feels immediate \u2014 the haze on a Delhi morning, the burning in your throat on a winter commute.<\/p>\n<p>But they are not two problems. They are two symptoms of the same underlying crisis \u2014 and in a city like Delhi, they are deeply, visibly intertwined.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><b>Same Sources, Different Consequences<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The burning of fossil fuels \u2014 in vehicles, power plants and industry \u2014 simultaneously releases two things: greenhouse gases that drive climate change, and particulate matter and toxic gases that pollute the air we breathe.<\/p>\n<p>Stubble burning, another major contributor to Delhi&#8217;s winter pollution spikes, also releases significant quantities of carbon dioxide and black carbon \u2014 both potent climate forcers.<\/p>\n<p>This means that many of the actions that worsen air quality also accelerate climate change \u2014 and vice versa.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><b>How a Warmer Climate Makes Air Worse<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The relationship runs in both directions. Climate change doesn&#8217;t just share causes with air pollution \u2014 it actively makes air quality worse.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Higher temperatures increase ground-level ozone formation. Ozone is a harmful pollutant that forms when sunlight reacts with vehicle emissions. Hotter days mean more ozone \u2014 and more respiratory damage.<\/li>\n<li>Changing wind and rainfall patterns affect how pollutants disperse. Delhi&#8217;s pollution peaks in winter partly because cold, still air traps particulates close to the ground. Climate change is altering these seasonal patterns in ways that are difficult to predict.<\/li>\n<li>More frequent and intense heat events increase dust storms and dry conditions \u2014 both of which contribute to particulate matter levels in urban areas.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong><b>Why Green Infrastructure Addresses Both<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This is where urban greening \u2014 done correctly \u2014 becomes genuinely powerful.<\/p>\n<p>A well-designed green barrier does not just filter particulate matter from the air. It also sequesters carbon, lowers local surface temperatures, reduces heat-driven ozone formation, and stabilises soil to prevent dust.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, it addresses both crises simultaneously \u2014 at the street level, where people actually live and breathe.<\/p>\n<p>This is not a complete solution to either climate change or air pollution. But it is one of the few interventions that meaningfully moves the needle on both \u2014 which makes it far more valuable than it might first appear.<\/p>\n<h2><strong><b>The Oxygen Wall Connection<\/b><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The Oxygen Wall programme is designed with this dual purpose in mind.<\/p>\n<p>Every installation reduces localised air pollution exposure at street level.
