Most people think of climate change and air pollution as two different problems.
Climate change feels distant — glaciers melting, sea levels rising, temperatures shifting over decades. Air pollution feels immediate — the haze on a Delhi morning, the burning in your throat on a winter commute.
But they are not two problems. They are two symptoms of the same underlying crisis — and in a city like Delhi, they are deeply, visibly intertwined.
Same Sources, Different Consequences
The burning of fossil fuels — in vehicles, power plants and industry — simultaneously releases two things: greenhouse gases that drive climate change, and particulate matter and toxic gases that pollute the air we breathe.
Stubble burning, another major contributor to Delhi’s winter pollution spikes, also releases significant quantities of carbon dioxide and black carbon — both potent climate forcers.
This means that many of the actions that worsen air quality also accelerate climate change — and vice versa.
How a Warmer Climate Makes Air Worse
The relationship runs in both directions. Climate change doesn’t just share causes with air pollution — it actively makes air quality worse.
- Higher temperatures increase ground-level ozone formation. Ozone is a harmful pollutant that forms when sunlight reacts with vehicle emissions. Hotter days mean more ozone — and more respiratory damage.
- Changing wind and rainfall patterns affect how pollutants disperse. Delhi’s pollution peaks in winter partly because cold, still air traps particulates close to the ground. Climate change is altering these seasonal patterns in ways that are difficult to predict.
- More frequent and intense heat events increase dust storms and dry conditions — both of which contribute to particulate matter levels in urban areas.
Why Green Infrastructure Addresses Both
This is where urban greening — done correctly — becomes genuinely powerful.
A well-designed green barrier does not just filter particulate matter from the air. It also sequesters carbon, lowers local surface temperatures, reduces heat-driven ozone formation, and stabilises soil to prevent dust.
In other words, it addresses both crises simultaneously — at the street level, where people actually live and breathe.
This is not a complete solution to either climate change or air pollution. But it is one of the few interventions that meaningfully moves the needle on both — which makes it far more valuable than it might first appear.
